A new beef enterprise in the Surrey Hills
Agricultural evidence and a whole-estate strategy to support a new extensive beef unit in a sensitive rural setting.

The project
A client needed agricultural buildings to support a viable enterprise on an estate in the Green Belt and the Surrey Hills. The holding included grazing land and woodland, but its former farmstead buildings had been converted to residential use and the client lacked the working agricultural infrastructure required.
The challenge
Earlier prior approval proposals had raised concerns. Prism Ag was asked to appraise the estate and help establish an agricultural strategy that reflected the holding, the enterprise and the sensitivity of the landscape.
Our approach
Prism Ag proposed an extensively grazed suckler beef enterprise, connected to the client’s hotel portfolio, and prepared agricultural justification and a business plan. Research into the site’s history helped inform the approach to the siting of the buildings. The work formed part of a wider consultant team, with landscape and visual assessment alongside the agricultural evidence.
The outcome
Full planning permission was secured for the agricultural development. The published scheme included cattle housing, feed and machinery storage, cattle handling facilities and associated infrastructure. The result followed a site-specific approach combining the operational needs of the enterprise with the wider planning considerations.
This case study describes a completed instruction. Planning requirements and circumstances vary, and the outcome of this project does not establish the route or result for another site.
